Sacred Tree in Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi, UAE

Sacred Tree in Al Bateen, Abu Dhabi, UAE
May 2010
The concept highlights the tradition of hammering nails into the trees to bring luck. Each of the Sidr trees would be surrounded by a timber deck, symbolizing the area of shade thrown by the tree and its importance to travelers in the desert environment. The timber deck provides protection from compaction of the root area by increased pedestrian traffic. Concentrating on the areas of the timber decks, but also scattered across the grassed areas, are groups of oversized “nails”, usable as informal seats. People will be encouraged to sit in the “lucky” shade of the trees.
